artist's biography
Assistant to Arnulf Rainer and Hermann Nitsch towards the end of the seventies, his interest turned towards the rarefied and disenchanted atmospheres of decadentism, particularly fascinated by the figures of D’Annunzio, Wilde and Huysmann.
Among others, Paul Renner has exhibited his artworks at the Nitsch Foundation, at the Morra Foundation, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Kunsthalle Wien, Houston Contemporary Arts Museum, Contemporary Arts Institute Omaha, Galerie Leo Koenig New York, Galerie Konzett Wien, Imago Dei Festival Krems.
The Hell Fire Touring Club
In 2000 Paul Renner founded the Hell Fire Touring Club in London, an association of chefs, artists, writers, artisans and collectors on an expedition to Europe and the Mediterranean, in search of Wunderkammer and mysterious characters.
Barocco and naïve
He paints and stages naïve settings: vases, jugs and armchairs in a baroque style, dark colours, pregnant contours, mystical symbols and allegories, mythological scenes and memories of ancient popular legends. The dreamlike imagery is a continuous source of inspiration for Renner which introduces fantastic and visionary elements into his paintings.
a synestethic concept: CHIAROSCURO
CHIAROSCURO is the name of the culinary performance by the artist Paul Renner in the Atelier Montez in Rome. Together with chefs Elena Ambrosch and Manuel Opitz Hofstätter, he serves up a multi-course menu with the aim of stimulating our sensory organs to such an extent that Caravaggio’s painting “Giuditta e Oloferne” of the beheading of Holofernes by Judith is incorporated. This is a unique art production, with all its culinary refinements, which ultimately leads to bacchanalian excess.
