30.11.2024 – 30.12.2024
Atelier Montez, Roma

The “Sinestetica” series continues with a new chapter by artist Akira Zakamoto, presenting the exhibition Umano Disumano: an intense and visionary journey through themes of transformation and the relationship between the human, the inhuman, and nature.

The Human Transition and the Poetics of Mutation

The exhibition comes from Zakamoto’s recent research, which is compiled in the book Umano Disumano (Nulla Die). In this work, the artist explores the shift from the human to beyond, super, sub, or trans-human dimensions. While technology promises a future of harmony and prosperity, the present is filled with contradictions like war, ignorance, and environmental destruction. As a result, nature reacts. Humiliated and oppressed, it rebels by engulfing humanity and its creations.

Works on Display

The exhibition features ten large canvases (up to 220×200 cm), painted in oil and inspired by the poems in the book. The faces of women and flowers appear in these works, both stylized and figurative. They blend symbols and images to tell a story of human transformation and the bond with nature. In addition, the experience goes beyond sight. Essential oils in the paintings release floral fragrances, turning the viewing of the canvases into a multisensory journey.

A Journey Through Poetry and Metaphysics

A video inspired by the book will play on loop during the inauguration. This dreamlike journey guides viewers through uniform cities, connected by dimensional tunnels, into liminal and metaphysical spaces. The video’s soundtrack, matching the visuals, will be a key part of the event. It will either play on loop or be performed live by selected musicians.

The soundtrack, a central element of the project, amplifies the impact of the images through a hypnotic and recursive rhythm. In it emerges a clear homage to the feature film “Umano, non “human” by Mario Schifano, a masterpiece of Italian experimental cinema which, with its recurrent cardiac heartbeat, connected heterogeneous visual fragments. Zakamoto takes up this intuition and reinterprets it using the sound of the heart as a universal symbol and rhythmic archetype, capable to unite apparently alien landscapes and build a sensorial unity that transcends the narrative dimension.
